Choreographer Maria Hassabi (NYC) will develop a new live-installation work, STAGING, focusing on the contours of stillness, while addressing the ways in which the spectacle of performance is presented within museum spaces.
BAC Resident Artist
Maria Hassabi is a Cyprus-born, New York–based artist and choreographer. Over the years she has developed a distinct choreographic practice focused on the relation of the body to the still image and the sculptural object. Her performances and installations have been presented worldwide in theaters, festivals, museums, galleries, and public spaces.
Hassabi is a recipient of the 2015 Herb Alpert Award; the 2012 President’s Award for Performing Arts from Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow; and a 2009 Grants to Artists Award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. She holds a BFA from California Institute of the Arts.
