Baryshnikov Arts Center Presents

Chromic Duo

Homecoming: love you all ways

March 14 + 15, 2022

Chromic Duo blends piano, prepared piano, toy piano, and electronics into genre-fluid performances and installations. This program brings together music by Chromic Duo, Kenyan composer Nyokabi Kariuki, and Brooklyn-based composer Phong Tran, technologist and visual artist Brian Ellis, and dance collective J CHEN PROJECT. Building upon the Duo's multimedia and chamber music performance practice, Homecoming: love you all ways utilizes research and prototyping of interviews and field recordings conducted in New York City’s Chinatown to bring to light the sounds and stories of the people and communities around them. This program combines performance art, sound design, installation, dance, and new technologies to reflect upon personal journeys and celebrate the resilience of Asian American communities in the face of uncertainty and adversity.

Chromic Duo

Chromic Duo blend classical music, toy piano, and electronics into genre-fluid performances and installations. Inspired by the small wonders of the everyday, they compose soundworlds inspired by the multitudes as third culture kids discovering their voice within the vast Asian American diaspora.

Their work often blurs the lines between film, VR, and AR, but the heart of their work remains constant: to create an intimacy and sense of wonder in their music that unravels the story of self-discovery and a passion for connecting the dots between grief and joy, belonging and displacement, and creating community in boundary-pushing performances and web-based experiences. Chromic Duo is Lucy Yao and Dorothy Chan. They were grand prize-winners at the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) and Concert Artists Guild (CAG).
