The Latvian National Choir, a leading exponent of the great Baltic choral tradition, performs an eclectic program including works by Arvo Pärt, 2014 Grammy nominee Ugis Praulins, and three U.S. premieres of works by acclaimed Latvian composers Jekabs Janchevskis, Gundega Smite, and Raimonds Tiguls.

The Latvian National Choir
One of Latvia’s brightest and most internationally reputed choirs, The Latvian National Choir celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2012. The choir has been awarded the Great Music Award of Latvia six times, and received the Award of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia (2003) and the award of the Ministry of Culture of Latvia (2007).
The choir’s artistic director and chief conductor, Maris Sirmais, and general manager, Maris Oslejs, have held their positions since 1997. The choir regularly gives concerts all over the world at prestigious concert halls, such as Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Hamburg Laeiszhalle, the Culture and Congress Centre in Lucerne, Igor Stravinsky Hall in Montreux, Philharmonic Hall at the Gasteig, Peter Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg, Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, and many more.
Additionally, the choir has participated in several significant music festivals, such as Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival, the Montreux Festival, the Klara Festival in Brussels, the Reingauh Festival in Germany, and many others.
The National Choir of Latvia has also collaborated with such world-renowned symphony orchestras as Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, and the Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra, as well as with the symphony orchestras of Finland, Singapore, Israel, Germany, the United States, Estonia, Moscow and St. Petersburg. It has performed with such outstanding conductors as Mariss Jansons, Andris Nelsons, Naeme Järvi, Pavo Järvi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, David Zinman, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Simone Young, Tõnu Kaljuste and others.
The choir has also recorded an album of Gabriel Jackson’s choir music A Ship with Unfurled Sails, which was issued by Hyperion Records. The choir has participated in recording the soundtrack for the film Das Parfum, collaborated with the musicians of Icelandic group Sigur Ros, and has participated in the performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s opera Moses and Aaron at the Opera House Graz as well as in the performance of Eriks Esenvalds’ opera Joseph is a Fruit Bough in Riga.
